Phil Nevin 1992 Classic Autograph Card

pLAYER'S sTORY

Phillip Joseph Nevin (born January 19, 1971 in Fullerton, California) is a former Major League Baseball player. He played for the Minnesota Twins (2006), Chicago Cubs (2006), Texas Rangers (2005-2006) San Diego Padres (1999-2005), Anaheim Angels (1998), Detroit Tigers (1995-1997), and Houston Astros (1995). Nevin attended El Dorado High School, in Placentia, California and California State University, Fullerton where he was awarded the Golden Spikes Award in 1992. He was also the "Most Outstanding Player" of the 1992 NCAA College World Series. He bats and throws right-handed.

Nevin was selected as the first pick of the 1992 Major League Baseball Draft by the Astros. Derek Jeter was selected sixth in the draft; Hal Newhouser, a scout for Houston at the time, quit the franchise over the decision not to pick Jeter.

During his twelve-season career, Nevin was a .270 hitter with 208 home runs and 743 RBI in 1217 games. He made the National League All-Star team in 2001. That year he led major league third basemen in errors, however, with 27, and had the lowest fielding percentage of all major league third basemen (.930).

On July 25, 2005, Nevin rejected a trade that would have sent him to the Baltimore Orioles for pitcher Sidney Ponson. The proposed deal was contingent upon Nevin's approval. He had the right to block a trade to all but eight teams, including the Orioles. Four days later, he was traded to the Texas Rangers for Chan Ho Park.

On May 31, 2006, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs; the Rangers were believed to be paying the majority of the amount still due to him on his contract. In return, the Rangers received second baseman/outfielder Jerry Hairston, Jr.. On August 31, the Minnesota Twins announced the trade of Nevin from the Cubs to the Twins for a player to be named later (Adam Harben) and "cash considerations." To make room for Nevin, Twins' outfielder Shannon Stewart was placed on the 60-day disabled list.

On May 12, 2007, Nevin announced his retirement. He then began working pre-game radio shows with the Padres. In June 2008, he returned to Goodwin Field at Cal State Fullerton as the ESPN analyst for the Super Regional against Stanford. In December 2008, he was named the manager of the Orange County Flyers in the independent Golden Baseball League.

The Player

Desmond Kevin Howard (born May 15, 1970 in Cleveland, Ohio) is a former American football wide receiver, punt returner, and kick returner in the National Football League.

He played for the Washington Redskins (1992-1994), Jacksonville Jaguars (1995), Green Bay Packers (1996, 1999), Oakland Raiders (1997-1998) and Detroit Lions (1999-2002). Prior to his professional career, he attended the University of Michigan where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1991. Howard also was voted the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXXI, and the only special teams player to win the award.

Howard now works for ESPN as a college football analyst. He appears as an in-studio personality and, in 2005, began traveling with Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit to marquee matchup sites during the season for the pre-game show ESPN College Gameday.

He is also currently the color commentator for Detroit Lions pre-season games on The Detroit Lions Television Network.

Charles Barkley Rookie Card

The Fleer 1986-87 is one of the greatest set that ever made because the set consists greatest rookie cards such as Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Akeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and Dominique Wilkins. I have one rookie card in this set, Charles Barkley that have BGS 7.5 (SOLD). Beside of the rookie cards, the Fleer 1986-87 has a nice design on it's border colour.
The Player

He entered the 1984 NBA Draft as a junior and was taken by the 76ers with the fifth overall pick. Barkley joined a veteran-laden team with stars such as Julius Erving, Moses Malone and Maurice Cheeks -- players who took Philadelphia to the 1983 NBA championship. Yet, Barkley averaged 14.0 ppg and 8.6 rpg and earned a berth on the NBA All-Rookie Team.

Like the mythical bird for which the city is named, Barkley found new life in Phoenix. In his magical first season with the Suns, he won the NBA MVP while leading Phoenix to the league’s best record of 62-20 and a berth in the 1993 NBA Finals. The Suns lost to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in a memorable six-game series.

Although over the next two seasons Barkley struggled with nagging injuries, he maintained a high level of play. The Suns reached the conference semifinals in 1994 and 1995, but lost to the Houston Rockets, the eventual NBA champs. And after four seasons in the Valley of the Sun, Barkley's time had set in Phoenix and he was traded to the Rockets.

The trio of Olajuwon, Drexler and Barkley would play together one more season in 1997-98 -- but at diminishing returns. Barkley's production slipped to 15.2 ppg and 11.7 rpg and the team played to a mediocre 41-41 record. This rare constellation of superstars had a short two-year life span as, after losing in five games to Utah in the first-round, Drexler walked away into retirement.

One last gasp for that ring was breathed into Barkley when, before the 1998-99 season, the Rockets acquired Scottie Pippen, the owner of six rings earned with Chicago. Barkley played 42 games in the lockout-shortened season and the Rockets went out in the first round of the playoffs to the Los Angeles Lakers. The mixture of Barkley and Pippen proved to be oil and water. In the offseason, the two exchanged harsh words through the media and Pippen was dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Barkley returned for his announced farewell season, but it ended prematurely because of a ruptured quadriceps tendon in his left knee. For the next two years, speculation continued that Barkley would return to the court. However, he remained on the sidelines for good.

Barkley remains an integral part of the game as a critically acclaimed and popular studio commentator on TNT's coverage of the NBA.

I have one vintage card of Lew Alcindor from Topps with the beckett value. He is a player who played for the Milwaukee Bucks 1969-75 and the Los Angeles Lakers 1975-89. He was named basketball's most valuable player a record-breaking six times between 1971 and 1980, won six National Basketball Association (NBA) championships, and is the game's all-time leading points scorer with 38,387 points. He played centre and, being 2 m 18 cm/7 ft 2 in tall, was noted for his ‘sky hook’ shot.

LeBron Raymone James (born December 30, 1984 in Akron, Ohio) is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). James, commonly nicknamed "King James," was highly promoted in the national media as a future NBA superstar while still in high school at St. Vincent - St. Mary High School, and was named Ohio's "Mr. Basketball" three times. At the age of 18, he was selected with the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Cavaliers and signed an US$90 million shoe contract with Nike before his NBA debut. He has since set numerous youngest player records. During his first season, he received the NBA Rookie of the Year Award and in the following four seasons received All-NBA and All-Star honors. He has led the Cavaliers to consecutive playoff appearances in 2006, 2007, and 2008; in 2007, the team advanced to the Conference Finals for the first time since 1992 and the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.

James is listed as a small forward, but is often classified as a point forward due to his ability to play point guard. He is a member of the United States men's national basketball team winning the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics and redeeming that result by winning the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics. He finished second in the league's Most Valuable Player balloting in 2006.

George Gervin Vintage Card

This is Topps 1977-1978 #73. I scanned the card's back. I always like to read the Bio on these set. Hope you enjoy this card like i do. And here is the player story from wikipedia.

The Player

Nicknamed Iceman (or Ice) for his cool demeanor on the court, Gervin was primarily known for his scoring talents. He led teams at both Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan and Long Beach State. After leaving college due to an altercation, Gervin was set to try out for the Virginia Squires of the ABA. It is rumored that Gervin made 22 of 25 three-point attempts, after which he was signed without Virginia officials having seen him play competitively.

His first scoring crown, which took place in 1978, was one of the most memorable moments in NBA history. He defeated David Thompson by seven hundredths of a point (27.22 to 27.15). Although Thompson came up with a memorable performance for the last game of the regular season, scoring 73 points, Gervin maintained his slight lead by scoring 63 points (including an NBA-record 33 in the second quarter) in a loss in his last game of the season. With the scoring crown in hand, he sat out some of the third, and all of the fourth quarter. Gervin went on to lead the NBA in scoring average three years in a row from 1978 to 1980 (with a high of33.1 points per game in 1979-80), and again in 1982. The Spurs drafted high scoring guards Oliver Robinson of UAB and Tony Grier from South Florida to take some offensive pressure off Gervin. Prior to Michael Jordan, Gervin had the most scoring titles of any guard in league history.

When he left the NBA he played for several years in Europe: in Italy for Banco Roma during the 1986-87 and in Spanish National Basketball Leaque, in TDK Manresa team (when he was already 38). At this point in his career he had lost some of his quickness, but his scoring instinct remained; he averaged 25.5 points, 5 rebounds and 1.2 assists and in his last match he scored 31 points and got 15 rebounds to stay Manresa in the first Spanish division.

His trademark shot was the finger roll, a shot where one rolls the basketball along his or her fingertips. While others mimicked this style when shooting layups, Gervin was known to "finger roll" from as far as the free throw line.

While sitting out 3 games due to injury, Gervin's replacement, Ron Brewer, averaged over 30 ppg. When Gervin returned, he scored 40+ points. When asked if he was sending a message, Gervin said, "Just the way the Lord planned it" and added, "Ice be cool" (with Ron Brewer).

Jerry West Vintage Card

The card is 1974-75 Topps #176. This is the only Jerry West Topps 70's card that i have. I'll show you the front and the back picture.

Player's Story

Like many NBA stars, West came from humble beginnings. His first nickname, "Zeke from Cabin Creek," was actually based on faulty information. He grew up in Cheylan, W. Va., although his family got its mail in Cabin Creek. He was the son of a coal mine electrician who could afford no luxuries and who was usually too drained from work to play with his children. Jerry's closest brother, David, was killed in the Korean War when Jerry was only 12.

Unrealistic or not, West the perfectionist propelled the Lakers to the Finals repeatedly in the 1960s and early 1970s. In 1961-62 West established himself as a deadly scoring threat in only his second year in the league. That year he averaged 30.8 ppg, the first of four seasons in which he averaged better than 30 points. The Lakers had risen from third place in the division to first since West's arrival, posting a 54-26 record. In the playoffs West averaged 31.5 ppg.

The Lakers' seven-game defeat at the hands of the Celtics in the 1962 NBA Finals was particularly heartbreaking. After taking the series lead on Baylor's then record 61-point performance in Game 5, Los Angeles dropped the next two. In Game 7 a 15-foot Frank Selvy jumper at the buzzer that would have won the game in regulation bounced off the rim. Boston won in overtime, 110-107.

West's long wait had ended. He had finally won a championship, in one of the greatest seasons ever for an NBA team. Revitalized, he went on to play for two more years. In 1972-73 the Lakers lost yet another Finals to the Knicks. In 1973-74 a pulled groin limited West to 31 regular-season contests and only one playoff game. "I'm not willing to sacrifice my standards," West told the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner when he retired. "Perhaps I expect too much."

In 1974, the 36-year-old West left the game as the NBA's third-leading career scorer, behind Chamberlain and Robertson, with 25,192 points in 932 games. His average of 27.0 ppg game stands as the fourth highest among retired players, behind Michael Jordan, Chamberlain and Baylor. His 31.2 ppg in 1969-70 (at age 31) is the highest average ever for a player over 30. And his 6,238 career assists (6.7 apg) rank among the best ever. Only Jordan had a higher career scoring average in the playoffs, and only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar tallied more career points in the postseason.

After two years away from basketball, West became the Lakers' head coach for the 1976-77 season. In three campaigns with West at the helm the Lakers went 145-101 and returned to the playoffs after missing the postseason during West's absence from the team. He stayed on as a scout for three years and became general manager in 1982, helping to build the Lakers' dynasty of the 1980s.

West remained as uptight in the front office as he had been on the court. "If I'm not nervous, if I don't have at least a little bit of the same self-doubt and anxious feelings I had when I started playing, then it will be time for me to go on," he told the Orange County Register in 1990. "I must have that tension." West was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979. West was named the NBA Executive of the Year for 1995 after the Lakers posted their best record in four seasons.

He was also at the forefront of rebuilding the Lakers into championship shape by adding Shaquile O'Neal as a free agent and trading for Kobe Bryant, who entered the NBA out of high school in 1996. Those two players formed the nucleus of three consecutive championship teams beginning with capturing the 2000 NBA Finals.

After being employed by the Lakers for over 40 years, West retired but soon became the President, Basketball Operations of the Memphis Grizzlies on April 30, 2002.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar Vintage Topps Cards

I think it's a best time to post my vintage cards in this blog. Because I've seen a lot of baseball's card blogs posting their vintage cards. This is form Topps 1976 #100 and had been graded by PSA and have grade NM 7. It's a jumbo size.

I won't talk about Kareem History, but when most NBA players retire, their paths are pretty predictable. They become head or assistant coaches on the college or professional level; they snag a fancy NBA analyst job, or sadly, in the words of noted scholar Mike Tyson, they fade into Bolivian. And in some respects, Abdul-Jabbar has followed that same path.

He coached the Oklahoma Storm of the United States Basketball League (USBL) to a title in 2002, and he has also been a scout and an assistant coach for the Knicks, Clippers and the Lakers, where he currently serves as a special consultant to the big men, specifically Andrew Bynum.

But what sets Abdul-Jabbar’s post-NBA career apart from most of his other peers is his love of history, specifically black history. Abdul-Jabbar has written books on the Harlem Renaissance, the lost achievements of African-Americans in World War II and a book about his season on a Native American reservation. All of the books showcase his vast knowledge and interest in history. And selfishly speaking, as a sports fan, it is awfully refreshing to see another side of an athlete I admire and respect. I can look at Abdul-Jabbar’s books and get a glimpse into how he thinks, as opposed to trying to glean something meaningful from a 5-10 minute post-game rehearsed sound byte. This isn’t a knock on today’s athletes as much as it is homage to Abdul-Jabbar.

Short Story

A native of the city, he attended the University of Houston and starred on the "Phi Slamma Jamma" teams of the early 1980s. A forward in college, Drexler teamed with Hakeem Olajuwon and Larry Micheaux to form a front line that took the team on two straight trips to the NCAA Final Four. In his junior season Drexler averaged 15.9 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting .536 from the floor.

The Blazers selected Drexler with the 14th overall pick in the 1983 NBA Draft. Looking back, it seems a mystery how such a great player slipped so low in the draft, especially in light of the careers of many of the players chosen ahead of him.

After almost a dozen seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, Drexler left Portland with his name all over the franchise's record books. A perennial All-Star and a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Dream Team, Drexler twice led the Blazers to the NBA Finals. It wasn't until he joined the Houston Rockets midway through his 12th campaign, however, that he finally earned a championship ring.

Drexler was named to the NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996, and retired after the 1997-98 season where he would coach basketball at his alma mater, The University of Houston. Eventually, Drexler left the game of basketball to spend more time with his family, but he has definitely kept busy outside of the hardwood. “The Glide” was last seen as the author of his biography, Clyde the Glide, as well as being the fourth celebrity voted off of the most recent season of "Dancing with the Stars."

Karl Malone Jersey Card

I like to post my jersey cards. I choose Karl Malone's Jersey Card. Before further information about Karl Malone or the "Mail Man", i give you the jersey card definition that taken from sportscards.about.com:

Definition: A card containing a piece of material taken from a jersey worn by a player or athlete. The most popular jersey cards are game-used or game-worn jersey cards, meaning that the material is taken from a jersey worn by the athlete in an actual sporting event. Other variations include event-worn, which come from jerseys worn by the subject at a photo shoot or other non-athletic event, and game-issued, which are taken from jerseys issued to the subject but never actually worn in competition. Cards containing jersey material that is all one color are generally seen as less desirable than multi-color jersey cards, which contain material featuring two or more colors.

I only have 2 Karl Malone's Jersey Card, 1 from his Utah Jazz's Game Worn and 1 from LA Lakers. The LA Lakers Jersey Card is my favourite.

Karl Malone

If professional scouts had correctly predicted the impact Malone would have on the NBA, he would have been picked much higher than 13th in the 1985 NBA Draft. The fact that he played in relative obscurity at Louisiana Tech, averaging 18.7 ppg and 9.3 rpg in three collegiate seasons, may have caused him to slip so low. As a rookie, Malone averaged 14.9 ppg and 8.9 rpg. He finished third in the voting for Rookie of the Year honors and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team.

Perhaps noticing Malone's potential, the Jazz prior to his second season, traded Adrian Dantley, the club’s scoring leader in each of the previous seven seasons, in exchange for Kelly Tripucka and Kent Benson. Assuming more scoring responsibilities, Malone's game improved exponentially as his scoring went up to 21.7 ppg and his shooting percentage increased from .481 to .598. However, beginning in 1987-88, Malone began a string of seasons virtually unmatched by power forwards in NBA annals. He made All-NBA Second team with 27.7 ppg and a career-high 12.0 rpg that year. Utah also posted a 47-35 record - the best in franchise history to date.

Over the next 11 seasons, his scoring average never dipped below 25.2 ppg and he collected no less 9.80 rpg in any give season. In 1988, he also began a string of 11 consecutive All-Star Team selections and in 1989 started a streak of 11 consecutive berths on the All-NBA First Team.

After Stockton retired following the 2002-03 campaign, he signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers. He joined fellow free agent Gary Payton and the dynamic duo of Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant to form a team with an almost assured four future Hall-of-Famers in an effort to capture that elusive championship.

The Lakers had won three consecutive titles (2000-02) but the season prior to Malone's signing, the team was defeated in the Western Conference Finals by the eventual 2003 NBA champs San Antonio Spurs led by Tim Duncan. Many declared the Lakers the 2004 NBA champs the day Malone and Payton signed on the dotted line.

However, in 2003-04, for the first time in his career, Malone spent significant time away from the court. Due to a knee injury and subsequent surgery he missed 40 games but did return near season's end only to re-injure his knee in the 2004 NBA Finals against the Detroit Pistons. Malone was unable to play in Game 5 and the Lakers lost the game and the series.

Ironically, his daughter Cheryl Ford who entered the WNBA in 2003 won a title later that year with the Detroit Shock.

In his illustrious career, Malone averaged 25+ PPG for 16 consecutive seasons, and 10 of those years also included a double-double. After a career falling two years shy of two decades, the Mailman has lifelong averages of 25 PPG, 10.1 RPG, 0.8 BPG, and 1.4 SPG. While Malone hasn't played since the 2002-03 season, there have been several reports of him playing in foreign basketball leagues.

The Card is Topps Elevation 2008 and it's numbered 15/15 (SOLD). This is one of my favourite autograph card, because i like the player and it's a scarce card. The card doesn't have a classic design, i think it's a contemporary style. In the front you can see a triangle piece of his jersey and his signature in a protection . In the back you can see the COA and a hologram.

Player's Story

David Robinson is living proof of the old adage that good things come to those who wait. A 1987 graduate with a mathematics degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, Robinson honored a commitment to serve two years in the Navy before joining the NBA. He was the best thing that ever happened to Navy basketball. A 6-4 player with one year of prep experience when he joined the team, he averaged 7.6 points and 4.0 rebounds as a freshman, but he grew seven inches while at the Academy and became a devastating force.

He scored 50 points in his college finale, a loss to Michigan in the NCAA Tournament. He also played on the 1988 U.S. Olympic basketball team that won the bronze medal as the last purely amateur team to represent the U.S. in Olympic competition.

The Spurs, who won the 1987 NBA Draft Lottery and owned the first overall pick, looked at Robinson’s college accomplishments and decided he was worth the wait. According to plan, Robinson entered the NBA as a 24-year-old rookie with the Spurs in 1989-90. One of the most gifted and versatile athletes in the NBA, the former Navy midshipmen was the NBA Rookie of the Month all six months of the season, an All-Star at midyear and then an easy choice for the NBA Rookie of the Year Award at season’s end. Robinson and his wife Valerie helped establish the Carver Academy in downtown San Antonio, and they are now more active than ever in school operations and funding as enrollment is expected to reach 120 next year. With the newfound ability to attend church services every week, Robinson relishes his leadership position, and appropriately compares his bible study to a locker room like the ones in which he spent so many years as a spiritual model for his Spurs teammates.

"My number one priority when I retired was to be home, just to spend as much time with my boys as possible,” Robinson says. “I’m just figuring out how to be Dad and being a husband, so it’s a good challenge and I’m learning a lot from it.”

In addition to spending time with David Jr., Corey and Justin, Robinson is now able to devote more attention to a couple endeavors he was involved with before retirement: the Carver Academy for underprivileged youth and Max Lucado’s Oak Hills Church.

Hakeem Olajuwon Chronology Autograph Card

This is another Autograph card that i own. The card design show that Hakeem Olajuwon was the basketball's star of 90's (SOLD). In this set, there are players of basketball's star of 50's, basketball's star of 60's, basketball's star of 70's, basketball's star of 80's and basketball's star of 90's.

Today Olajuwon live in his home in Sugar Land, Texas, outside of Houston, a house inspired by Johnson and such modernist contemporaries as Richard Meier, Hugh Newell Jacobsen and Luis Barragán, as well as the Venetian Palladian style and the traditions of Olajuwon's Islamic faith. NBA big men are a lot like architects: Their first loyalties are to the functional -- score, rebound, block shots -- but the best synthesize existing modes with an artistic flourish or two. Like the architecture of his house, Olajuwon's aesthetic in the low post blended the old and the new. "To make the center position fun -- that was my vision," he says. "To add shakes and bakes and moves. If you're a center, you're thought to be mechanical. But when I faced up on a guy, I was no longer a center. I was a small forward."

Toward the end of his NBA career Olajuwon would spend off-seasons in Jordan, studying Arabic so he could read the Koran in the original. Now he inverts that schedule. He spends three or four months in Houston, checking up on his investments (property) and tutoring NBA big men. The rest of the year he's in a farmhouse outside Amman, with his wife, Dalia, and their five children, ages 10 to two. Abisola, his daughter with his college sweetheart, Lita Richardson, will be a 6'3" sophomore center at Oklahoma next season.

Yao Ming Autograph Card

I choose this one from my collection for the new post (SOLD). Yup, it's because the 2008 Beijing Olympic's atmosphere. Yao Ming already an icon for China especially in Sports. "After serious consideration, we have decided that Yao Ming will be the flag bearer," announced Cui Dalin, the deputy chief of China's Olympic team.

Yao, a centre for the Houston Rockets, is the NBA's tallest player. He carried the Olympic torch through Tiananmen Square on Wednesday. He the one who carried the China Flag in 2004 Olympic in Athens and 2008 Olympic in Beijing.

The first basketball game in 2008 Olympic will be China vs USA. Wow!!!

“I will have to take a breath at the beginning of this game,” said Yao. “It is the start of the first Olympic Games to be played in China. It is the event that my country and I have been looking to for seven years, since Beijing was awarded the Games. “I am so happy that I have been able to recover from my (foot) injury to be ready. To play against the USA team will be a great challenge and a great honor.”

The game will be start at 10:15 p.m Sunday, 10Th August 2008. “The atmosphere is going to be crazy. We’re playing against the home team to open up the Olympics, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be crazy and energetic in there. Everybody in that building is going to be jumping. It’s the biggest game on the biggest stage in the world.”

The United States enters the Olympic tournament once more as the heavy favorite to win the gold medal, while China will be challenged to advance out of the preliminary round. So, the game is expected to be a rout. But with the basketball-mad host country playing its first game against the global superstars of the NBA, there is speculation the worldwide television audience for the game (9:15 a.m. Houston time, Ch. 2) could be the largest in Olympic history.

President Bush – the first sitting U.S. president to attend an Olympics in a foreign country – will attend the game along with China’s president Hu Jintao and premier Wen Jiabao.

Okay, some of you will ask, what's it all about?

BGS

BGS is Beckett Grading Services. It a services to grade a card for a specific value on the Centering, Corners, Edges and Surface plus Autograph. If you use beckett magazine as price guide, there are pages that explain about Condition Guide. Here are the explanation:

Centering

Centering is the measurement of the position of the cards image. A perfectly centered card is where the card's image is aligned exactly where the card company intended to be. Centering can be quickly judged by the naked eye. A border that is just slightly less than even on both sides of the card would measure 55/45. If one border is twice the size of the other, that equates to approximately 65/35. Because centering is an important element of the overall eye appeal of the card, centering can be a major factor in the cards overall grade.

Corners

Along with centering, the corners are one of the most important areas of a card when grading. A dinged corner drops a card's aesthetic value like a rock. To achieve a superior corner grade of GemMint or better, each corner must be blazingly sharp. Study your card's corners under magnification using a loupe. A 10x loupe is good for card grading. If the corners are all sharp to the naked eye, you are probably safe with a mint or higher corner. Once a speck of wear is visible, or a bump can be seen, the grade starts dropping fast. Always look very carefully around the whole corner not just the very tip. Often there may be an actual crease or bump across the corner, which may be difficult to detect at first, but once seen, becomes obvious. If any corner shows a bend or crease or other noticeable wear, the corner grade will likely drop to near mint or lower.

Edges

Unless heavily damaged, edges are often treated with general disregard by collectors. In reality, edges reveal more than just a grade- they are usually the key are in determining trimming or other alterations. Edges indicate how well the card was cut at the factory. While allowances are made for certain types of factory-cut edges such as O-Pee-Chee cards, the quality of the cut is taken into account to some extent. When it comes to after-market damage, the grading process is not as lenient. Chipping and notching that occurs after the card has been cut and packaged at the factory is weighed more heavily than factory problems in determining edge grades. Any large chip or notch in an edge is quite distracting and can lower the grade proportionately. To earn mint or better grades, the edges must be clean and sharp.

Grades

After each factors has been examined for example this card it has 10 for centering, 9.5 for corners 9.5 for edges and 9.5 for surfaces, you will have 38.5 in total (10+9.5+9.5+9.5). So it have 9.5 Gem Mint, it from 38.5/4 = 9.625. The 10 for autograph didn't included. It has separated examination. If you look at the first graded card on top, you will see it has 8.5. From the explanation below you will see it has Near Mint-Mint (NM-MT) because it bigger value than 8 the grade add + in the criteria. So it became NM-MT+

Gem Mint [9.5] & Pristine [10]

considered higher than Mint. Pristine is the absolutely perfect card, very very scarce.

Mint [9]

No flaws, the perfect card. Four perfect corners, 55/45 or better centering, smooth edges, original color and gloss, no print spots, color or focus imperfections. A professionally graded mint card receives a large premium in price, often 200% or much more than Near Mint prices quoted in price guides. Many of the cards pictured in this book do not even in exist in this grade, and Mint examples would sell for lots of money.

Near Mint-Mint (Nrmt-Mt) [8 & 8.5]

Close, but not a Mint card. Centering must be 60/40 or better. There may be a minor flaw with the card such as a slight 'touch' (a light point of wear where the card was bumped or touched), the picture slightly out of focus, or a slight color imperfection. Nrmt-Mt cards also receive a premium in price over a Near Mint card. This premium is not as high as a Mint card. Again the cards from this book are rarely found in this high of grade. Cards from the 1990's are regularly found in this grade

Near Mint (Nrmt) [7&7.5]

Close, but not a Near Mint-Mint (Nrmt-Mt) card. Its centering can't be worse than 70/30. One of the following imperfections is allowable: very slight touch to two or three corners, slight wear to the edge, minor print spots or color imperfections. This is the standard grade which cards are measured buy in the hobby. The prices quoted in most books are for Near Mint cards.

Excellent-Mint (ExMt) [6&6.5]

Card may have visible surface wear or a printing defect which does not detract from its overall appearance. Corners may have slight fraying. The picture may be slightly out of focus. The card may show loss of original gloss or have a minor wax stain on the back. Centering must be 80/20 or better.

Excellent (Ex) [5&5.5]

Centering must be 80/20 or better, with four fuzzy corners. It may also have rough edges, minor discoloration, print spots or focus imperfections.

Very Good (Vg) [4&4.5]

This card shows wear, but still retains some attractiveness. Corners may be somewhat rounded. There may be edge wear, border discoloration, hairline creases.

Good (Gd) [3&3.5], Fair (Fr) [2&2.5], Poor (Pr) [1&1.5]

The bottom rung of cards. Good is the best and Poor is the worst. A Good card has significant wear, such as severe corner rounding, creasing, fading, staining or other problems. Altered or retouched cards will fall into this category). A Good card still retains some attractiveness. A Poor card has extreme problems, such as a significant part of it is missing, or ink or paint has marred it. The difference between a Fair and a Poor card, is that a fair card has some semblance of appeal while a Poor card is utterly repulsive.

Hakeem Olajuwon Autograph Card

I love all my exquisite cards. Especially this card, it numbered 23/25! Yup, only 25 cards exist in this world (SOLD). I have another Hakeem Olajuwon AU Card, but i only show you this card. Maybe next time i'll show you the other card. But sorry for this poor scan, hope it still clear.

He was born January 21, 1963, to Salaam and Abike Olajuwon, who owned a cement business in Lagos. Soccer and handball were the sports that first attracted young Akeem. He started playing basketball in 1978 and competed with the Nigerian team at the All-African Games in 1980.

In December 1981, he played his first official game in the U.S., against Mississippi State in the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Classic. He totaled eight points and three rebounds. He averaged 13.3 points as a collegian while attempting fewer than 10 shots per game, but in 1983-1984 he led the nation in rebounding (13.5 per game), blocked shots (5.6), and field-goal percentage (.675). In his first season in the NBA, scoring opportunities multiplied and he topped 20 points per game.

In 1992, management entertained trade offers for Olajuwon. He stayed, Tomjanovich took over as coach, and soon the Rockets soared again, streaking to the championship in 1994 after beating the New York Knicks in the Finals. Olajuwon became the first player ever to win the regular season MVP, Defensive Player of the Year Award, and NBA Finals MVP in the same season. With Clyde Drexler joined the Houston, they won the NBA Championship in 1995.

Patrick Ewing Autograph Card

Yes! This is an autograph card. Beautiful, isn't? Patric Ewing's AU cards are rarely available for sale. That's because he didn't sign too much card. Ewing is now a Magic assistant coach and played the final year of his career with the team. But his credentials were earned with Georgetown and the New York Knicks, where he was an 11-time all-star.

About the only thing missing in his collection is an NBA championship. He can blame Olajuwon in part because Houston beat the Knicks in the 1994 NBA Finals. From the beginning, from college, they have history. In the 1982 NCAA championship game, showed a skinny Ewing sitting glumly on Georgetown's bench as North Carolina celebrated a 63-62 win. The Hoyas made three Final Fours with Ewing and won in 1984 over a Houston team led by a Nigerian native who was wearing a dark blue suit Monday. Yes, that's (H)Akeem Olajuwon.

Beside this card, i have Olajuwon Exquisite AU card. I will post about Olajuwon AU card next time.

Magic Johnson Autograph Card

You gonna love to have this card. First it's an autograph card (SOLD), the second it's an authentic jersey card and third it limited only 25 cards in the whole world . . . Yes i know there are 1/1 auto-jersey cards available. But to have one of this rare card it's so wonderful.

With New Jersey He Found New Spirit

Yup, Shaq had 4 win in a row. The last game was vs Sacramento Kings, the Suns won 127 - 99. Shaq has 17 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. So, why i say that he has found new spirit? Consider this, in Miami Heat shaq has better point per game (ppg) average 14.2 with more minutes per game (mpg) average 28.6. In Suns, he has 10.9 ppg with 27.5 mpg, but in his new team he get 10.2 rebounds per game (rpg) in Heat he just got 7.8 rpg. Click below to enlarge the statistics.

Shaq has a focus, if his team met solid teams, he concentrate to make rebounds so he had less points and high rebounds. But if his team need points, he able to get high scores. In Miami Heat he just confuse about what to do, especially when Wade is not arround. With his age, he get tired and make his spirit loss to concentrate for winning the game. Here in Suns he has a new future, will he get the next ring of champion? Still long road to answer. But, his cards are getting higher. Grab his cards, while still low ;-) I mean low but not too "low". This is one of my possesion, his auto card and numbered to 25 (SOLD). Yes only 25 cards in the world exists.

Dirk Nowitzki vs Andrei Kirilenko

Dirk Nowitzki was called for a flagrant foul

In the game Dallas Maverick vs Utah Jazz (Mon, Mar 3), he knocked down Kirilenko in the first quarter, but Andrei Kirilenko still able to hit his two free throws before being taken to the hospital for X-rays. The result is Kirilenko injured his right hip. He will miss Friday's game at Phoenix and is doubtful for Saturday's home game against Denver. The NBA suspended Nowitzki for one game Wednesday. SALT LAKE CITY/MUNICH, GERMANY (February 8, 2008) – Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) announced today that Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko has been named the 2007 Europe Men’s Player of the Year. The 6-9 forward takes home the honor after winning a vote of both fans and a panel of basketball experts, media and coaches from 25 different countries. After leading Russia to a gold medal and garnering MVP honors at EuroBasket 2007, Kirilenko has also helped the Jazz to a strong start in the 2007-08 NBA season. Last year's winner, Dirk Nowitzki finished second while Jose Calderon of EuroBasket silver medalists Spain came in third.

Andrei Kirilenko is a deserving winner of this award," commented FIBA Europe President George Vassilakopoulos. “Very few people expected Russia to win the gold medal this summer and their eventual victory was due in large part to his stellar play.""Andrei is one of the best players in the world and he proved that this summer in Spain," added FIBA Europe Secretary General Nar Zanolin. “Russia has always been a force in European basketball but in a competition like EuroBasket you need more than just talent and he proved his abilities extend beyond his impressive statistics."

Phoenix Suns in Another Home Loss

Home Loss? Why?

Hmmm... with Shaq in the center, why didn't make any improvement? I think you should read the statistic below for more comprehensive statistics. You can see the opponent had better Field Goal average percentage except a wonderful 100% Phoenix's Free Throw percentage (19-19).

The second is, The Sixers had 13 on steals and the Phoenix just had 2! Woopss..... What is this means? I think the Phoenix's players had terrible concentration or passing or both of it. They didn't take the home's adventage, by stay calm.

The third is the rebounds. The phoenix had 40 and sixers 39. Amare Soudemire had 26 points and 11 rebounds. Ray Evans had a good job with 13 point and 13 rebounds for Sixers. It seems that they had tie in ball possesion. That's why Phoenix had trouble to win over Sixers.

To bad, huh?!

The Shot Heard 'Round The World

I have this lovely autograph card and i think it's good to share with you all about this player. A short story about why Garfield Heard or you can call him Gar Heard, become famous.

The "Shot heard round the world" is a well known phrase that has come to represent several historical incidents throughout world history. The line is originally from the opening stanza of Ralph Waldo Emerson's Concord Hymn (1837), and referred to the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. Later, in Europe and the Commonwealth of Nations, the phrase became synonymous with the shot that killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand and plunged Europe into World War I.

In the NBA, the phrase is well-known for the memorable fifth game of the 1976 NBA Finals. Gal Heard's high-arching jumper as time expired in the second extra period sent the contest into triple OT, the first in Finals history. Heard's dramatic "Shot Heard Round The World" found its mark 31 years ago, sending Game 5 of the 1976 NBA Finals between the Suns and Celtics to a third overtime, extending the "Greatest Game Ever Played" for yet another five minutes. At the end, Celtics won Game 5 in Triple OT: 128-126. Heard scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while playing a team-high -- and NBA Finals record -- 61 minutes in that June 4, 1976 contest, but it was his heroics at the end of the second overtime that will forever be remembered.

The shot was also voted by Phoenix fans as the most memorable moment in franchise history during a Suns.com poll in 1998. Gar contributed more than that single shot, though. Over the course of his Suns career, the 6-6 forward averaged 7.5 points and 7.1 rebounds a game.

Since his playing days, Heard has established himself as one of the NBA's most respected coaches. Currently an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks, Heard has also served as a head coach with Dallas and Washington and has assisted in Indiana, Dallas, Philadelphia and Detroit. He began his coaching career in 1982 as an assistant at Arizona State University.

Yao Ming to miss the rest of season?

General manager Daryl Morey made the announcement Tuesday, hours before the Rockets put their 12-game winning streak on the line against the Washington Wizards. All-Star center Yao Ming is out for the season with a stress fracture in his left foot, a stunning blow to the surging Houston Rockets.

Yao was examined after Monday’s practice at Memorial Hermann Hospital and met Rockets team physician Dr. Tom Clanton to go over the test results. The Rockets confirmed the news this afternoon. He is averaging 22 points and 10.8 rebounds for the Rockets (36-20), who have won 12 straight games to move within 2.5 games of front-running San Antonio in the Southwest Division. Yao has been an All-Star in each of his six NBA seasons, averaging 19 points and 9.2 rebounds.

Clanton said there was no specific event that led to the injury, but rather an accumulation of stresses on the bone. Yao first experienced soreness and pain in his ankle before the All-Star game and tests were done Monday when the situation didn’t improve. This is Yao’s fourth major injury in the last two years. He missed 32 games last season with a fracture in his right leg and 21 games in late 2006 with a toe infection that required surgery. He missed four games in April 2006 after breaking his foot.

If Yao chooses surgery, Clanton said, it would involve placing screws across the bone to hold it together. The second option would be to treat it with a cast and crutches. Both options involve a healing time of about four months.

Cavs made a great game, 3 of their starter scored double-double. Lebron James: 25 points and 11 assists. Ben Wallace: 12 points 10 rebounds. Zydrunas Ilgauskas: 22 points 13 rebounds. In another game, Phoenix Suns loss with minus 30 points from their opponent. Grant Hill showed a bad appearance. With 26:35 minutes play he didn't score at all. But Shaq still their best defender with 11 rebounds and 7 points. Amare Stoudemire scored team high 31 points, Rasheed Wallace scored team high for Pistons with 22 poits. 3 Party Exchange

You have heard the News: Larry Hughes, Drew Gooden, Cedric Simmons and Shannon Brown to the Bulls and Ira Newble and Donyell Marshall to Seattle. In exchange, the Cavaliers acquired forward/center Ben Wallace and forward/center Joe Smith plus Cleveland will get the 2009 second round draft pick from the Bulls and swingman Wally Szczerbiak and guard Delonte West from the Sonics. The last transfer is Andrian Griffin from Bulls to Cavs to Seattle (yeah, this one really 3 party exchange).

The new players have picked their numbers. Wallace's normal No. 3 is worn by Sasha Pavlovic, so Wallace will wear No. 4. Smith will take over Hughes' No. 32, Szczerbiak will wear his normal No. 10 and West will wear his normal No. 13.

But the new players didn't play when the Cavs won 90-89 over the Wizards. Actually, Lebron James wanted to have Jason Kidd. But James said he was pleased that the move brought front-line help and improved shooting, two areas he thought needed shoring up. He also is looking forward to playing alongside Wallace.

The DieseL "Slow but Sure"

After the lost from Lakers 124 - 130, Phoenix Suns won over Boston Celtics 85 - 77.

Shaquille O' Neal, after getting 15 points in his debut, just score 4 points. But he had a good defence with 14 rebounds, 2 block Shots. His team mates, Grant Hill scored double double, 14 points and 13 Rebounds. Amare Stoudemire scored team-high with 28 points. Kevin Garnett Scored team -high for Celtics with 19 points.

It's a prove, that Shaq can score and still a tremendous defender. I think in his age, Shaq have to concetrate on 1 point, scoring or defending. With shaq on the defence, his teammates can focus for making points. You can see the complete result below (click to enlarge), that Shaq has 13 defensive + 1 offensive rebounds. It's good to use his nicknames "DIESEL", because if many people argue that Shaq is become slow, The Diesel himself can prove that he is maybe slow but sure.

Certificate Of Authenticity - COA

Is there anything you like most in collecting cards, than having a card that personally autographed by the player you have adore for years? I don't. Thus, i really love my autograph cards, wether it's include piece of other memorabilia or not.

You can get those autograph by asking the player, or get it from pacs. An autograph card from cards manufacture have their own certificate of authenticity printed on the card. Usually in the back have an annoucement that the card company certify the autheticity of the autograph.

Card company such as Topps, has sticker on the autograph.

Vince Carter Skybox Auto has seal of authenticity in the front of the card (SOLD).

If you can ask the player to sign a card from you, there is no Certificate Of Authenticity (COA). Unless you send it to a company such as Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) or Global Authentication (GAI) or other reputable company, i guess it's hard to convince other person that your autograph's card is authentic.

Months ago, i bought a card that signed by Larry Bird with a COA (SOLD). You can see the example of a Certificate of Authenticity. If you ask me is that an authentic autograph or not, honestly i really don't know. But the autograph it seems typical with the autograph cards from Card Company, see here. Below are some additional pointers to keep in mind when you are told that an autograph card has a certificate of authenticity:

* To repeat: Always see read, understand, and substantiate the full text of any certificate of authenticity BEFORE you buy the card.

* If the card is for sale online, request and review the complete COA, front and back, and not just a portion of it. Either have the seller FAX it to you or send clear, legible, and complete digital images.

* Any conditional statements found in a certificate of authenticity such as "in our considered opinion..." or "we believe that..." are warning signs that the card may not be genuine. A valid certificate states that the card is unquestionably signed by the player who has signed it.

* A valid certificate of authenticity should contain documented proof or evidence as to why the autograph is genuine.

* If you have any questions about a certificate of authenticity, contact the individual or entity that authored it, assuming that person is not the seller, and ask those questions BEFORE you buy the card.

* A certificate without adequate contact information for the person or company making the statements, or with only an unidentifiable signature should not be considered valid. Illegible or incomplete contact information is NEVER acceptable.

* Certificates for card by famous company such as Upper Deck, Classic, and Topps should include the exact titles of the card, dates the card was produced, names of publishers (for limited editions), edition sizes (for limited editions), and exact dimensions of the card.

* Anytime that a certificate of authenticity does not meet all of the above requirements, consider yourself at risk if you buy the card.

I guess we have to understand the basic about basketball card, here we go . . .

CASE - BOX – PACK

CASE = The card company distribute its product with cases. Each case contain some boxes

BOX = In a box, you can find 1 pack or more. Some manufacture, produce boxes that contain 36 pack.. The premium card usually has fewer packs. For Example Exquisite; it has just 1 pack

PACK = In a pack, you can find 1 or more cards. Recent packs usually has fewer cards. For Example Topps Trademark Moves has just 5 cards in a pack.

REGULAR CARD

Let’s talk about the regular card. When you buy a box or just a pack, its cover has informations about what you will find in a box or a pack. A product usually has regular cards (base cards) that produce massively (the picure on the left is Jordan's Exquisite base card). You can devide a regular card into 2 different type: statistic and subset.

Statistic Regular Card has a spesific player’s statistic history year by year and sometimes plus a short information about the player.

Subset Regular Card has a specific information or events or anything else beside a statistic regular card.

Yeah, i like watching NBA action since a little kid. It's fun. The thing i like most is collecting basketball card. The funny thing is, if i remember about basketball i just remember all NBA players.

Well, collecting is really challenging. Like the picture on the top. It's Michael Jordan Insert Card From Topps 1996-97 Super Team NBA Finals. This card more valuable than regular card.

I guess some people wondering about what is regular card? What is Insert card? e.t.c. Here it is:

Regular Card: Card that you can find in any packs from all basketball cards manufacture. Usually the front card consist the player photo's. Behind are the statistics and/or short story about the player.

Insert Card: Card that you can find from a pack but there is an odds. Example, an odds to find Magic's All Rookie Insert Card From HOOPS is 1:36. It means, You can find 1 card in every 36 packs.

Parallel Card: Card that similar to Reguler or insert Cards, but with diffrent design. And there is an odd to find this kind of card (see: Insert Card). A parallel card from a regular or insert card is more difficult to find.

But what exactly that make people crazy to collect them?

If you like someone or something, you will often imagine about it. Like to talk about it. And become interesting everything about it. In a basketball card, you can see a picture, a statistic, history, story, a piece of memorabilia such as signature/autograph, jersey, warm up, shoe, floor and any other things. And it's really cool to have some of the cards and see them in your possession.

The second thing, a basketball card has a value. If you have a Lebon James Rookie card from exquisite, it worth around $10,000. Can you imagine it? If the player are hot or on the fire such as Kevin Garnett, the value of his card will gradually up. Why? That's refer to Economic theory, supply and demand. If many people searching for specific player's card and not much people offer to sell it, it will more valuable than a player that not much people want to buy, in the other hand many seller offer the cards.

Third is the challenge and satisfaction. If you want to collect a player, for example Jason Kidd, you will exciting if you have his card that only 25 cards exsist. Or maybe just 1 card in the whole world it called 1/1 card. And if you can complete a series of insert card, that make your collection worth to proud of. But to complete a series is not easy.
